Mike
Kowalski Driver/Owner
Mike's Career began
in 1956 in Danbury, CT working with his Uncle and father
on his uncle's stock car. Tinkering with the big boys earned him the position
of Crew Chief in 1965.
During the two years
Mike served as Crew Chief for his uncle's car they finished third in the
points race for two concessive seasons.
Later
while serving with the military in the North West Region of the United
States, Mike served as Crew Chief for a hobby car and a straight up sprint
car. The hobby car was the 1971 points champion and the straight up sprint
car ranked in the top ten.
After
his obligation to the military was complete Mike moved back to CT and
became Crew Chief for a modified car in Danbury. Again,
with Mike's determination and experienced leadership this car finished
top ten in points.
Mike
and his family moved once again to Bristol, Virginia. Here his love of
competition lead him to tractor pulling. In 1989 he began with a 1965
Pro-Street 4-Wheel drive Ford Truck. With this truck Mike earned a second
place finish in points in his first season. His first win was in Abingdon,
Virginia in 1992 and he continued to win the points championship
for the next 3 concessive seasons. Mike held the coveted honor of 4-WD
truck champion until 1996.
Having felt he had
conquered the 4-wheel truck division Mike was seeking a bigger challenge.
In the winter of 1996 he decided to enter a class that would open up a
all new aspect of tractor pulling, Mini-Modified Tractors. Mike removed
the 572 cubic inch Ford motor from the 5800 LB 4-WD truck and
put it in a 1850 LB mini-modifed frame.
Mike quickly learned
there is a huge difference in driving a 4-WD truck as opposed to driving
a mini-modified tractor, considering 90% of the time the two front wheels
of the mini-mod is off the ground. His first win was again in Abingdon
in 1997. Since then Mike and his team has traveled to many NTPA events
and practically every time Mike has finished in the top five.
Since
Mike was a past 3 year champion in the 4-WD class no one was offering
him free advice, so through trial and error Mike's mini mods as well as
his skills driving and building them has developed and refined since 1989.
Now with his second bigger and better tractor called Chain Reaction
Mike is poised to break out and become the front leader in the mini-modified
class. Watch for Mike to climb in the rankings with the years to come.
Mike's married to
Dee, a office manager for Century 21. They met while he was serving in
the Airforce in Mountain Home, Idaho. They have two daughters, Stephnie
who is also a tractor pull driver and Christina who attends school in
Bend, Oregon. Chris went to Oregon to visit her mother's family, loved
it and decided to stay. Her parents and sister miss her very much. She
would like to work with the preservation of endanger species in the future.
